Sen. Hillary Clinton called for federal regulation of tobacco products by the Food and Drug Adminstration at the LiveStrong Presidential Cancer Forum in Cedar Rapids this morning.
“It is an addictive deadly substance, and we need to regulate it,” she said in response to a question from cancer survivor and forum moderator Lance Armstrong.
Clinton said that her health care plan would “help pay to have smokers quit by paying” for smoking cessation programs “because that is a lot cheaper than paying for end-stage lung cancer.” But Clinton stopped short of calling for a national ban on smoking in public places, citing the complexity of local zoning rules.
“I think the way that we are proceeding is probably the smarter way right now,” she said. “A lot of it depends on local laws and regulation.”
In addition to smoking cessation programs, Clinton said she would favor an increase in the excise tax on cigarettes to increase their costs, as well as federal regulation of tobacco advertising.
“I favor the FDA being able to regulate advertising about nicotine and tobacco products, and we’re going to push through a bill, I hope, to get that done,” said Clinton.
