Century Farm Families Honored at Iowa State Fair

By Dien Judge | 08.14.07 | 10:42 am

It’s often said that family farms are the bedrock upon which Iowa is built.

Agriculture is the driving force of rural Iowa’s economy, and farm land is a precious gift that is passed from one generation to the next.

Farms that are kept in the same family through the generations are cherished in our state, and those that have been held in the same family for 100 years are honored as Century Farms.

This week there are 321 family farms being recognized as Century Farms during ceremonies at the Iowa State Fair. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey will bestow the honors today on the Terrible’s/Channel 5 Stage.

An even higher honor, the Heritage Farm distinction, goes to farms that have been kept in the same family for 150 years. The Heritage Farm ceremonies will be held Thursday at the fair, where 87 Heritage Farms will be recognized.

The Century Farm program is sponsored by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, with additional sponsorship by Farm Bureau. The program began in 1976 as a part of the nation’s Bicentennial celebrations, and has continued its tradition of honoring more than 15,000 family farms in Iowa.

The Heritage Farm honor was added just last year, on the 30th anniversary of the Century Farm program.

Family Farm no more I think this was wonderful to recognize and honor these families with century farms.  However my grandmother Marjorie Ann Krebs (Phillips) died in 2006 and she is the one who should of gotten the award.  At that time the farm had been in our family for over 152 yrs.  Grandma worked hard to keep the farm after my grandfather died in 1951 of a massive heart attack.  She was pregnant at the time of his death with their third child.  And yet this single mother of 3 never married again..she moved to town and rented out the family farm(sometimes for less than what the taxes and insurance came too).  She raised 3 children on her own because back then there wasn’t social security to help her.  She worked 2 jobs…what is irontic to me is that when she was in her early 20′s she almost went blind and the job she held for 28 yrs was a proof reader.  My grandmother was a remarkable woman someone that would always be there for a friend or loved one. She is deeply missed by those that knew her. This yr. the family farm was recognized for being in the family for 150 yrs…it is the last time it ever will be!  My grandma wanted my husband and I to get the first option to buy the family farm…as it went we were not given that option unless you call an auction getting the first option.  (note to those wanting family farms to see the next generation…check your wills be sure there are no loop holes) And it is not easy when bidding against someone that is a developer and has their heart set on buying it all…well we managed to keep 20 plus the 5 we have our house on.  We tried to find grants to help us with the purchase but…there were none.  I wrote to Senators…the Vice President I was desperate to save my family farm…no one had ever owned it but a Krebs…and that meant something to me.  I wanted to be able to pass it down the line.  What grandma worked so hard to keep is now just 25 acres not 210…Great Great grandpa had 1300 acres is what I am told by the older generation….1300 and now 25.  All I wanted was to keep it in the family…and those that sold it saw $.

P.S.  Part of the land bought is now for sale not even a yr later for 5000 more an acre than it was originally purchased for!  No it isn’t what we bought…we ended up paying more than we had wanted but we wanted to get what was around our house so we wouldn’t have a house right outside our front door!
