In the land of punditry, many people get things wrong without consequence, but few are praised for getting things right. One person who called the Mike Huckabee upset in the Ames Straw Poll correctly was the Rev. Bill Devlin, president of the non-partisan group Redeem the Vote, which works to register Christians between 18 and 30 to vote. The group says it helped register 79,000 young people in 2006.
Devlin had come to Iowa to increase that demographic’s political power during the straw poll. “Our goal is to get young people of faith to the straw poll,” he told me last Friday in Ames. “Huckabee clearly has the momentum,” he added, because “Sam [Brownback] has been in the attack mode…that’s probably not the way to go.”
