It seems that "reliable sources" can only remember what happened yesterday. In 1964 the Des Moines Register, as I recall, reported that 85,000 Iowans greeted Barry Goldwater at an October rally in downtown Des Moines, and that 125,000 Iowans greeted Presdient Lyndon Johnson at an October rally on the west front of the Iowa State Capitol. Richard Nixon addressed a huge crowd covering the Merle Hay Mall parking lot in 1968.

Going back further, the Des Moines Register and Leader reported that on April 28, 1903, more than 100,000 people saw and heard President Theodore Roosevelt during his two hours in Des Moines. During that short time he made half a dozen speeches, including one on the east front of the Iowa State Capitol.
