Poll puts Greenwald within striking distance of Latham

By admin | 10.26.08 | 1:30 am

U.S. Rep. Tom Latham is facing a more serious threat this year than he did in 2006 according to the first public poll of the race.  The poll, conducted by the nonpartisan firm Research 2000 and paid for by the liberal blog DailyKos, finds Latham, the Republican, with a five-point lead over Democratic challenger Becky Greenwald.

Overall, Latham draws support from 47 percent of likely voters in the 4th district, while Greenwald draws support from 42 percent.  11 percent of likely voters said they were undecided.

Sen. John McCain, the Republican presidential nominee, leads Sen. Barack Obama, his Democratic opponent, by a similar margin in the 4th district — 46-42.

That Greenwald has pulled within the margin of error in a public poll is an accomplishment in itself.  In 2006, a strong Democratic year, Latham defeated Democrat Selden Spencer by 14 percentage points.

I wonder if this poll is undersampling Democrats and/or young people.

If Obama is leading Iowa by double-digits, surely he is not trailing McCain in IA-04.

To my mind the most important finding is that Greenwald is running even with Obama. Latham needs a significant number of ticket-splitters to hold on.
