Setting the bar very, very, high, Tommy Thompson’s campaign manager e-mailed supporters Thursday: “Tommy Thompson has made it clear that if he doesn’t finish first or second this week in Ames, Iowa at the straw poll, he will not go on in this race.”  A University of Iowa poll released Wednesday showed the former Wisconsin governor with 2.4 percent support, so perhaps his best hope for second place is if people confuse him with Tom Tancredo or Fred Thompson.
