Wednesday was a difficult day for The American Independent News Network, which is the larger entity that operates The Iowa Independent. Our chief executive and founder announced two of our sister sites would close and their content would be moved to The American Independent.
A recently introduced bill could have far-reaching impact on the U.S. sugar industry, including American Crystal Sugar, a farmer-owned cooperative that locked out 1,300 Midwest workers on Aug. 1.
The chairman for Herman Cain’s Iowa effort says the campaign “relied more on the word of farmers than Washington regulators” in deciding to run an ad containing claims the Environmental Protection Agency says are false.

DAVE LOEBSACK RELEASE — Veterans Day is an opportunity to reflect on the service of generations of veterans and to honor the sacrifices they and their families have made so that we may live in peace and freedom here at home.
Video Coverage: Giuliani Town Hall Meeting in Bettendorf
Republican Presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani
claimed Tuesday in Bettendorf that “probably you’ll never elect a president
who has put more people in jail than me, if you elect
me.” This drew some laughs but much of his talk was
serious as he recalled his years enforcing drug laws
and keeping New York City safe.
As part of an Eastern Iowa tour designed to showcase
his commitment to increasing the number of adoptions,
decreasing abortions and improving the quality of
life for children, Rudy Giuliani spoke and took
questions at a town hall meeting inside the Bettendorf
High School Fine Arts Center. His new emphasis on
children and abortion issues is viewed by many as
reaching out to conservative voters unable to accept
some of Giuliani’s more liberal views. Video coverage is available below the fold.
During the question-and-answer part of the meeting,
one man wondered if he would need a Karl Rove or Dick
Cheney to advise him in the White House. Giuliani
laughed at this idea, but was quick to praise Bush and
his advisers.
His rare, faint praise for Democrats came when he
noted that the Dems’ criticism of past Republican
earmarks had been on the mark. But he scored points
with the largely white-skinned, white-haired audience
when he revealed that in the eight months since
November 2006, the Democratically controlled Congress
had made about 36,000 requests for earmarks, well
beyond the number made by a Republican Congress,
declaring that “the most Republicans did was about
20,000 (in eight months).”
His campaign day included stops in Davenport,
Bettendorf, Clinton, Dubuque and Maquoketa.
In the following seven-minute video from the event (below the fold), an attendee
from Bettendorf talks about the reasons she endorses
Giuliani and the issues she feels are most
important. Also hear Giuliani’s responses to
questions about controlling earmark spending by
Congress and his ideas on legal and illegal
immigration.
