CHICAGO — Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York has had a strained relationship with many prominent members of the national blogosphere since announcing her presidential ambitions earlier this year, but her campaign’s decision to attend YearlyKos, the largest convention of progressive bloggers in the country, seemed to soften many bloggers’ opinions of her.
That all changed late Thursday, when organizers of YearlyKos notified convention attendees that Clinton would appear at the “Presidential Leadership Forum” but would skip her post-forum “breakout session.” The campaign will instead send Ann Lewis, prominent women’s activist and a top adviser to the Clinton campaign, in the senator’s place. The announcement sent a wave of disruptive boos and hisses throughout the crowd of 1,500 in the Hyatt McCormick convention center.
Clinton’s session was listed alongside sessions from all of the other candidates planning to attend the forum, and the announcement was unexpected. Attendees, who were asked to select a breakout session when they registered, expressed disappointment that those who signed up for Clinton’s session would not get what was promised.
The long-term impacts of Clinton’s decision are difficult to discern, but the level of the disruption caused by unhappy convention attendees may not bode well for her campaign.
