Obama up by 12 in Register’s Iowa Poll

By John Deeth | 09.14.08 | 12:23 pm

Barack Obama leads John McCain 52 percent to 40 percent in Iowa, according to a Des Moines Register Iowa Poll released Sunday.

The poll, conducted Sept. 8 through 10 after both parties’ conventions, also included Libertarian Bob Barr, at 2 percent, and Ralph Nader at 1 percent, and has a 4 percent margin of error.

In the U.S. Senate race, incumbent Tom Harkin leads Republican challenger Christopher Reed, 53 percent to 34 percent.

Other key findings in the Register article:

  • Independents prefer Obama to McCain, 49 percent to 36 percent.
  • Voters under 35 prefer Obama by two to one.
  • Obama leads among women, 53 percent to 39 percent for McCain.
  • Republicans are more satisfied with McCain’s running mate, Sarah Palin, than Democrats are with Joe Biden, Obama’s vice presidential pick.
  • President Bush’s approval rating with Iowans is at an abysmal 25 percent, with 71 percent disapproving.
  • Senator Chuck Grassley remains popular with Iowans, at 69 percent approval.

The rollout of Iowa Poll presidential results usually signals a weeklong series of Register stories featuring polls on other races and issues.

I can feel the winds of change blowing today and it's bringing the bitter smell of burning financials. This much water will cost the government dearly. Neither candidate has had much that is constructive to say on these Wall Street issues. With their “business as usual” economists in charge, I don't think either party is going to prove to be able firefighters. However, the government(you) has deep pockets and the apparent resolve to see this disappear until after the election. We'll have to wait and see. This next week should prove interesting.

I haven't been polled….I appreciate Grassley. Palin is inspiring. McCain is a Patriot. The Hawkeye State isn't limited to just the university population and it hasn't had it's full say yet. I say Democrats are blaming Republicans for the mess we're in so I think that mess should be handed over to the Republicans to fix! I also believe Obama would be a far better president after the Iraq War is concluded and he's had a little more Senate time.

Palin is an embarrassment every time she opens her mouth.

The Mccain campaign looks more like the Keystone Cops and these people want to lead America!!!!

    I don't think so.

Americans are entering the biggest financial crisis in its history all because of republican deregulation of America's financial infrastructure! McCain voted for thsi! …….so when you lose your job, house or farm, you can blame McCain!

Maybe he'll let you move into one of the 12 houses that he owns….if he can remember where they are!!!!!
