Charges have been filed against a truck driver from Lake View in a case involving the dumping of dead hogs in the Raccoon River.
Andrew Spanjer, 28, has been charged with 143 counts of improper disposal of dead bodies, and one count of polluting a state waterway. Sac County Attorney Earl Hardisty said the charges were filed on Tuesday, and Spanjer is expected to appear before the Sac County magistrate on Friday.
Iowa Independent reported on June 18 that the decomposed carcasses of 31 hogs were found dumped in the river near Haage Park in Sac City. Iowa Department of Natural Resources specialist Tom Roos said in a telephone interview with Iowa Independent that people who were boating in the river discovered the hogs. The hogs were being trucked to two locations in Iowa from an Indiana farrowing operation.
Hardisty said that the investigation is ongoing and that other individuals may be charged in the case.
