Wednesday was a difficult day for The American Independent News Network, which is the larger entity that operates The Iowa Independent. Our chief executive and founder announced two of our sister sites would close and their content would be moved to The American Independent.
A recently introduced bill could have far-reaching impact on the U.S. sugar industry, including American Crystal Sugar, a farmer-owned cooperative that locked out 1,300 Midwest workers on Aug. 1.
The chairman for Herman Cain’s Iowa effort says the campaign “relied more on the word of farmers than Washington regulators” in deciding to run an ad containing claims the Environmental Protection Agency says are false.

CHUCK GRASSLEY RELEASE — A difficult job market is challenging the soldiers, sailors and airmen who have protected America’s interests by serving in the Armed Forces.
TOM LATHAM RELEASE — No one has done more to secure the freedom enjoyed by every single American than our veterans and those currently serving in the armed services.
DAVE LOEBSACK RELEASE — Veterans Day is an opportunity to reflect on the service of generations of veterans and to honor the sacrifices they and their families have made so that we may live in peace and freedom here at home.
The political arm of the American Family Association has “invested $200,000″ in the campaign to oust three Iowa Supreme Court justices up for a retention vote this fall, according to Bryan Fischer, the group’s director of issue analysis for government and public policy.
However, disclosure reports filed with the Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board (IECDB) show only $60,000 has been spent thus far by AFA Action Inc. The campaign, dubbed Iowa for Freedom and led by former GOP gubernatorial hopeful Bob Vander Plaats, is not a separate legal entity but rather a local committee of AFA Action.
Patrick Vaughn, general counsel for American Family Association, said in an e-mail to The Iowa Independent that his group will “be filing requisite disclosures” on the money that is not yet accounted for by the IECDB. Fischer made his comments at the Family Research Council’s Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C.
“The Supreme Court in Iowa in 2009 imposed same-sex marriage on the Hawkeye State,” Fischer said. “Three of the judges who were a part of that ruling are on the ballot for a retention vote in November. AFA Action has already invested $200,000 in that campaign, because we think that is a campaign we can win.”
Fischer said AFA research shows 28 percent of Iowans will vote “no” on judge retention “as a matter of course.”
“So we don’t have to get from zero to 51 percent, we only have to get from 28 to 51 percent,” he said. “This is the first opportunity that the citizens class has had to strike a blow against judicial activism, and we believe that’s a fight that we can win.”
Article III of the Iowa Constitution establishes the judicial branch of our state; Article V denotes that the Supreme Court “shall constitute a court for the correction of errors of law.” The Iowa Supreme Court in Varnum V. Brien held that the marriage law erroneously violated Article I of the Iowa Constitution, namely that all people are equal and that the legislature may not create a law that “grants to any citizen, or class of citizens, privileges or immunities, which, upon the same terms shall not equally belong to all citizens.” This section is analogous to the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution. When the Court deemed the law at error and in contradiction to the Constitution, it meant that the legislature must not deny same-sex couples marriage privileges and benefits. Thus, the only alternative was that Iowa must allow to same-sex couples the enjoyment of marriage. The Iowa Supreme Court and the justices serving on it only uncovered an “error at law,” and therefore were only performing the duties they were designated. If anyone chooses not to retain the justices in question this November, it should not be for “not following the Constitution” when they in fact protected it. (ascribed to Nick carter)

Reminds me of the bully on the playground who gets all his bully friends together to beat up the kid who gets straight A's – because somehow, in the bullies mind, the kid getting straight A's is somehow responsible for the bully being stupid.

I think from now on, the fans should be able to, by majority vote, fire any referee of any football game regardless of video replays or any other pertinent information. That would teach them a lesson.
Just got a robo cal from AFA. If their issue is fear of homosexuals, why did it complain about some beer party her kids had? Come on AFA, if your anti-gay marriage arguement does not stand up, why pick a non-issue to robo call about?
