Immigrants don’t steal American jobs, study finds

By Elise Foley | 08.31.10 | 10:30 am

One of the major complaints against immigration — both legal and illegal — is that non-Americans take jobs that could be occupied by citizens during a time of high unemployment. But immigrants actually boost incomes and productivity over time, according to a paper released Monday by the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. The study’s author found immigration has no “significant” effect on the number of jobs available to U.S.-born workers.

The main reason, economist Giovanni Peri argues, is that U.S. and immigrant workers tend to take different jobs, particularly because immigrants often face language barriers that make them less likely to take higher paying jobs requiring strong communication skills. This allows U.S.-born workers to shift toward these jobs, Peri writes.

Interestingly, this means lower language skills among immigrants actually help American workers, writes Kevin Drum at Mother Jones:

What’s really striking about this is that the very mechanism that provides the productivity boost — the fact that immigrants don’t speak English well and therefore push native workers out of manual labor and into higher-paying jobs — is precisely the thing that most provokes the immigrant skeptics. They all want immigrants to assimilate faster and speak English better, but if they did then they’d just start competing for the higher paying jobs that natives now monopolize.

Many other economists have come to the same conclusion as Peri: Immigrants help the economy to grow and therefore create jobs and increase average wages for American-born workers.

The trend is true overall, but not necessarily for every worker: Economists say some workers, particularly in low-skilled jobs, could see lower wages due to an influx of immigrants. Some argue the exploitation of undocumented workers drives down wages for everyone in certain sectors — which they say is why comprehensive immigration reform is vital.

Elise Foley and the other elitists need to pull their head out of the sand and go to the streets where millions of lower skilled USA citizens are out of work due to illegals who will work for less in factories, meatpacking plants, construction jobs, on horse ranches, reastaurant jobs (that our teens need to earn $ for college), and sanitation jobs.

I am glad many states are now fighting back!!! Here where I live you can not even get a factory job without taking an in depth test given only in English and after proving you are a LEGAL resident and in many places are even required to have a back ground check and submit to drug testing. It is sad that these measures are necessary but it is the only way to protect citizen workers.

This is not true. 7 million illegals occupy non-agricultural jobs in the US

This Nation was built on LAWS, First and foremost! It is one size fits all. So the idea that operating in a Nation “illegally” is acceptable is not a premise to run a nation one. Whether it is to do business, transport, entertain or any other activity in this Nation. The idea that the Justice or any other body of our Constitution can allow the ignorance of defining the acceptance of Illegal activity to persist is unacceptable! Either you are a Representative standing up to support the Constitution or you are a “hack” that want to break certain laws to favor your ideas. Stop telling me that your urine in my face is the rain. Start enforcing the LAWS of this land!

Though I agree with the comments regarding the illegal status of some of the immigrants in question, I would point out that 1) the report is reflective of BOTH illegal and legal immigrants and 2) why is it the immigrant’s fault that the corporations are breaking the laws and hiring them? This is capitalism, baby. If factories, meat packing and construction continually did thorough background checks and refused to hire them, there would be no opportunity here for them to risk the illegal entry. You all have been drinking whatever you have been given for so long, you cannot see simple facts. It isn’t the immigrants that need your rage. It is the corporations.
