The City of Ames will lift restrictions on water use in place since floodwaters caused a water main to break on Wednesday. However, residents are warned that the water is still not safe to drink unless it has been boiled.
“We have made tremendous progress,” said John Dunn, director of the city’s Water and Pollution Control Department. “We are progressing better than I dared to hope, but we ask that the public please continue their conservation efforts and don’t start using mass amounts of water prior to 2 p.m., as we need to allow the water towers to fill up again.”
Ames residents will be able to resume their normal water usage, including laundry, toilet flushing, showers/bathing and outdoor debris clean-up. But until further notice, water coming from the tap should still not be used for purposes such as drinking, brushing teeth, washing dishes, preparing food and making ice unless boiled or treated first. Both commercial and residential dishwashers are also not considered effective means of sanitizing the water.
Safe drinking water will continue to be distributed at all four locations in Ames until the boil advisory is lifted. These sites include Sam’s Club on Airport Road, McFarland Clinic West (next to West HyVee), ISU Towers parking lot and Wal-Mart on Grand Avenue. Residents may pick up two gallons of water per person each day.
