Bob Elbert, photographer for Iowa State University, documented the effect of historic flooding on the school’s campus in Ames.
The Skunk River crested Wednesday at 26.7 feet at U.S. Highway 30, one foot higher than the previous record in 1993. Squaw Creek crested Wednesday at 18.1 feet, just shy of the 18.5 record in 1993. In addition to the rising waters, the city was forced to shut down its water system because of possible contamination following a large main break. A boil-water advisory is still in effect Thursday morning.
A few of Elbert’s photos are after the jump. More are available from the Iowa State News Service. There are also photo galleries at The Ames Tribune and The Des Moines Register.
