Abandoned Manure Pit Leaks, Causes Fish Kill

By Dien Judge | 06.19.07 | 4:01 pm

An abandoned hog manure pit near Columbus City has leaked into a nearby stream, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources reported Tuesday.

A statement released by the DNR reported that the manure pit was under a recently demolished hog confinement owned by Randy Wood of nearby Columbus Junction. The confinement building had been demolished, and the manure pit was improperly filled with dirt, causing the liquid manure to run out into the nearby tributary of Monkey Run Creek.

Manure from livestock feeding operations is supposed to be land applied, according to state regulations before being abandoned.

DNR specialist Jim Sievers said the area is being cleaned up and the number of dead fish are being counted. As stated in the news release, possible enforcement actions are being considered by the DNR.

Who owned the hogs? Is there any way to find out who actually owned the hogs when this factory farm was in operation? They should be held as accountable as the farmer, and the outfit that was destroying the building. What are "possible enforcement actions?" shouldn't their be mandatory enforcement actions? The fact that factory farms can pollute even after they are done should be a sign to everyone in the state that this type of farming is not what we need. We have some of the dirtiest waters in the country, our air is being fouled, property and qaulity of life is being ruined- but yet we continue to let absentee corporations contract out hogs all in the name of "economic growth" that means profit for shareholders, and more financial burden on local Iowans. Someone should be held accountable here- and it is Randy Wood and the company that filled his building with hogs.
