Fighting floods over the past four months has cost the city of Des Moines more than $1 million. Those expenses largely consist of levee and sewer repairs.

Terry Branstad‘s gubernatorial campaign has largely stopped touting its promise to cut government by 15 percent once in office, liberal blog Bleeding Heartland points out. “Nor have we seen any details about how Branstad would balance the budget while spending no more than 99 percent of projected state revenues.”

Home foreclosure rates in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids are up from last year. However, both Eastern Iowa cities are still beating the national average.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates admits leaked information and news reports “have been a spur to action for me.”

The soft drink lobby is beefing up its efforts against state taxes on sugary beverages. Supporters of the taxes say they help cover health care costs, but the soda companies say it’s unfair to group them in with alcohol and tobacco.
