Unemployment extension will pass if Dems can pay for it, Grassley says

By Jason Hancock | 06.28.10 | 11:02 am

The jobs bill, which includes an extension to unemployment benefits among other provisions, could be passed if Democrats would be willing to pay for it with stimulus money and offset other spending, U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley said in an interview with The Iowa Independent.

Last week the bill failed to garner the 60 votes necessary in the U.S. Senate to overcome a filibuster.

Sens. Max Baucus, D-Mont., and Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa (WDCpix).

“Ninety percent of the bill isn’t controversial,” Grassley said, concluding that the big problem is that he and many other lawmakers don’t want to add to the federal deficit. He chided Democrats for refusing to fully pay for the legislation with offsetting savings, revenue increases or using the money left in the federal stimulus.

Even though Democrats repeatedly cut the bill in an effort to win Republican backing, the latest version would have added $55 billion to the nation’s $1.4 trillion deficit over 10 years, according to the Congressional Budget Office.  Grassley said he’s heard from his constituents that they are tired of the government running up huge debt, and that the message is starting to get through to Democrats as well.

“It wasn’t just Republicans who voted against the bill in the U.S. House,” he said. “There were plenty of Blue Dog Democrats who don’t agree with this type of spending either.”

He added that in February he and U.S. Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., put forth a bill that would have extended unemployment benefits and other important items in the jobs bill, including the biodiesel tax credit, but Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid killed the measure.

“It was paid for,” Grassley said. “We could have passed that in three days instead of wasting three weeks.”

Reid said at the time that the Baucus-Grassley bill wouldn’t do enough to show voters that the Senate was serious about addressing the unemployment problem, focusing too much on tax cuts and not enough directly on job creation. Critics also pointed out that extensions of both unemployment and COBRA benefits would have run only three months in Grassley’s legislation.

Around 1,500 to 2,000 Iowans a week will begin losing their unemployment benefits if the bill isn’t passed. And a failure to extend increased federal funding for Medicaid will shoot a $121 million hole in Iowa’s FY2011 budget, according to the nonpartisan Legislative Services Agency.

RETWEET MARCH for unemployment extension & Tier V! Free millions of Americans from poverty before the 4th of July. We are suffering, while this is being debated. Why would they do this? I will be going door to door, to make sure the people who didnt pass this will NOT be elected in the fall. Many more people feel this way also. People are really in trouble.

Hey I got an idea! Why don't you go door to door and start looking for a job? Instead of wasting your time and effort worrying about which politician will hand you the most of other people's money. Become independent rather than the poor dependent person you are now.

Hey, I've been looking for a job for over a year. This is the longest I've ever been out of work. The bible says we are not to judge other people. I'm sure you are not aware that unemployment is taxable. So, therefore it is not other people's money as you put it. Get off your high horse. You could be in the same boat someday and you will change your tune.

mike the prophet your a faggot homo with a silver spoon who isnt educated like the rest of the republicans do you even follow whats going on in the job markets… THERE ARE NO JOBS you fucking loser get hit by a car

Mike the Prophet, are you really that naive? Where do you live “Hollywood?”
I have been working for 56 years and have never had to draw on “MY” unemployment insurance. Where do you come off saying other people's money? Are we not all tax payers? You talk about being independent from other people's handout? I just wonder how hard and loud you would cry if you didn't get your food, clothing and material from one of the many ports I have worked at. You see Mike, your dependent on me to stay alive. Now shut the hell up!

I come from the same kneck of woods as Senator Grassley does. I sure hope he knows that the citizens of Iowa are hard working. Please don't punish the citizens of the United States of America because of the overspending in other issues. Trsut me, I'd much rather have a job then unemployment. I just don't think individuals that aren't going through being unemployed fully understand what it's like and how hard it is. I pray that those individuals don't have to experince being unemployed and unable to find employment. This seriously is a scary thing, i would not wish this upon anyone!

I want unemployment to stay and not be cut because of all those without jobs right now and they will then suffer and not be able to support their family. So please for those out of work don’t cut off unemployment benefits.
