A Council Bluffs City Councilman will face Democratic incumbent Michael Mauro in November to determine who will serve as Iowa’s next Secretary of State.
Matt Schultz, who won the endorsement of former Secretary of State Paul Pate, took roughly 45 percent of the vote in a three-way Republican primary against former state lawmaker George Eichhorn of Stratford and small businessman Chris Sanger of Stuart.
The secretary of state’s office has previously served as a spring board for politicians who aspire to hold a higher office. For instance, current Gov. Chet Culver held the job for two terms prior to launching his successful bid for governor. One of Mauro’s key points on the campaign trail is that he has no aspirations of seeking other offices, and that he is satisfied with serving as the Secretary of State.
