Ford retiring, Des Moines teacher running for his seat

By Jason Hancock | 03.16.10 | 11:20 am

The Des Moines Register is reporting that former Iowa Teacher of the Year Ruth Ann Gaines will run for the Iowa House seat held by Wayne Ford.

Ford had repeatedly refused to clarify whether he was running for re-election again, with the deadline to file being this Friday at 5 p.m. Former state Rep. Ed Fallon accused Ford of colluding with the Iowa Democratic Party to handpick his successor and avoid a contentious primary.

House District 65 s made up of several neighborhoods in northeast Des Moines and considered one of the safest Democratic seats in the state. Ford has represented HD65 since 1997.

The announcement of Ford’s plans came in a press release regarding Gaines’ campaign. Ford did not respond to a request for comment.

UPDATE: Ford has issued a press release announcing his retirement.

Its better to stay silent and commit anything to the public before they are under actual situation to answer people on their situations.
