POSTVILLE — At least two boxes of tissues have circulated among the roughly 100 people gathered at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church to speak to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
No one in the audience seems to be immune to the emotional stories being told by the immigrant women and children in attendance. U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, a Democrat from Illinois and head of the delegation, has bowed his head numerous times in order to wipe his eyes with a cloth.
Rep. Joe Baca, a Democrat from California, walked from across the room to embrace one of the female workers after she nearly lost her voice to emotion while telling her story.
Even the several dozen children in the room stilled when one mother, overcome from the situation, began to nearly scream her family’s story to the audience.
