Susan Tully of FAIR brings up and misconstrues Iowa Independent article on Jan Mickelson Show

By admin | 07.24.08 | 5:53 pm

This morning’s Jan Mickelson show was (again) dominated by a discussion of illegal immigration.  One of Mickelson’s guests, Susan Tully of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, misconstrued this Iowa Independent article from earlier this week on the air to claim that U.S. Rep. Tom Latham planned to participate in a protest in Postville this weekend.

Latham’s office called into the show and corrected Tully’s incorrect reading of our story.  Our reporting was accurate, but Tully probably hadn’t read it.

To listen to the conversation, download the podcast and skip to about 1 hour and 7 minutes into the audio.  It lasts about 15 minutes.

I can see how she could “misconstrue” it, since Latham sounds like a real piece of work. Instead of simply acting as a press release service for corrupt politicians, how about having the guts to call them on their misleading statements? You could start by pointing out that the people responsible for separating families are those who came here illegally. Almost all illegal aliens aren’t kidnapped, they come here through a long process usually costing a large amount of money. They know exactly what they’re doing.

Try doing real reporting for a change.

Or, perhaps, they could point out that people wouldn’t come here illegally if there were no incentive for them to do so. The incentive, in many of these cases, is not some abstract concept as ‘freedom’, but something as simple as economic benefit. Were these irresponsible businesses to conduct themselves ethically and legally, the illegals would have no chance at economic gain and thus have no incentive to be here, illegally or otherwise. They’ve created an attractive nuisance and are therefore the cause of the problems.

TLB could try doing some real thinking for a change instead of spouting talking points and engaging in ad hominem attacks.

    Wow, some people’s kids…

Too long has the American public stood in the shadows to speak openly against illegal immigration. I have been following both sides of the illegal immigration debate and found that the issues are much larger than harvesting crops or media examples of illegal immigrants being deported away from their child, something extremely rare.

Every year more than 4,320 US Citizens are killed by illegal immigrants. Since 9/11 over 25,920 Americans have died as a result of an un-secure border. On January 21, 2008, in Cottonwood, MI an illegal immigrant struck a school bus that killed 4 students: Hunter & Jesse Javens (9 & 13 years old), Emilee Olsen (9 years old) and Steve Reed (12 years old). How many more thousands of senseless deaths could have been prevented if the State and Local Government would enforce sound immigration laws and secure the border?

The Department of Homeland Security estimates that over 2,900 children are molested by illegal immigrants yearly. On July 2007, Zina Linnik (12 years old) was raped and murdered by an illegal immigrant. On January 2008 an illegal immigrant was arrested in Chandler AZ on 25 felonies including kidnapping and child molestation. The Rutherford Institute reported that over 18,000 women and children are being sold as sex slaves and transported into the United States each year. How many more thousands of children will be victimized until we speak up for them?

For fair and open debate we cannot ignore the human cost to American Citizens on the cost of illegal immigration. I thank Ms. Tully for speaking up for millions of us too afraid to speak up.
