Culver to sign Race to the Top

By Jason Hancock | 01.15.10 | 3:55 pm

Gov. Chet Culver announced moments ago that he will sign a bill making Iowa eligible for up to $175 million in federal education funding today in his office.

To compete for the money, known as Race to the Top funds, Iowa had to pass changes to its education system in line with federal standards. Those changes include requiring school boards to negotiate with teacher unions on how to fix the state’s most troubled schools, tying teacher evaluations to student test scores and expanding charter schools.

The deadline to qualify for the funds is Tuesday, causing the state Senate to pass the legislation Wednesday (the third day of the session) and the state House to pass the bill Friday.
