By Dana Boone | 03.19.08 | 12:24 am

State and Des Moines leaders met with a founder of World Wide Technology, Inc., an African-American owned business based in St. Louis, Mo., with $2.5 billion in sales last year.
Wayne Ford and David Steward

“The set of core values that you guys carry here is very, very important to us and that work ethic as well as your commitment to excellence and to quality is important,” said the company’s founder and chairman, David Steward on Tuesday at the State Capitol.

He said the company is looking for partnerships with government and local businesses.

“We are in a very, very good position to be able to bring technology partners and our valued partners to the state of Iowa, to government, to education and to the commercial sector.”

State Rep. Wayne Ford, D-Des Moines, said he arranged Steward’s visit to Iowa to network. He said the technology-based IT firm could benefit the state in many ways, including locating a potential center in Iowa and jobs, training and mentoring. Working with a giant like World Wide Technology could also benefit other businesses and inspire minority businesses, he said.

“We want your business in the state of Iowa,” Ford said. “It’s a tremendous possibility.

Ford and Steward said more young people would consider staying in Iowa if they’re able to work for companies like World Wide Technology, and Ford added, Google, which is building a $600 million data center in Council Bluffs, and potentially Microsoft.
