Sparks Fly on Both Sides During Hostile Karl Rove Lecture

By T.M. Lindsey | 03.10.08 | 11:49 am

The last three weeks of frigid Iowa weather had no affect on Iowa City’s anti-war community, which had been eagerly anticipating the postponed Karl Rove lecture at the University of Iowa.Rove, the former deputy chief of staff and senior advisor to President George W. Bush, was originally expected to speak Feb. 17, but the event was postponed due to inclement weather.

While the delay provided more time for some community members to stew about Rove’s appearance and the $40,000 speaking fee, it also gave anti-Rove contingencies such as the UI Anti-War Committee, Iowans for Peace, and Iraq Veterans Against the War (see pic below) an opportunity to organize protest efforts.

Protesters started gathering at the Iowa Memorial Union at 5:30 p.m. for the 7:30 p.m. start time and greeted people waiting in line with a barrage of signs and chants from a squad of cheerleaders, the Radical Cheerleaders: “One, two three, four;/We don’t want your racist war/Five, six, seven, eight;/We won’t cooperate

great story this is a fine piece of reporting and reflects all that blogs are meant for – covering the truth when the msm fails to do so

Truth The mainstream media did not mention any of Durham’s questions. It did not suggest that the audience consisted primarily of a hostile audience.

I’ve never read the Iowa Independent before, despite growing up in Des Moines and spending four years in Iowa city.

I’ll be reading from now on.

There are a number of assertions made in support of the thesis that this is a good appointment, but they are unsupported. An engineering degree is a nice qualification for a job in an engineering firm, but this is an economic development and contracts board. This is all political calculus and takes some of the stress load off the relationship between Gov. Culver and Senator Gronstal.

If anything, better qualified Democrats should be upset that there is nearly no meritocracy within the Party apart from the right connections. The Republicans are not harmed by this, but it was another opportunity for Rants to throw mud.
