I have had friends that are gay and have been together for many years without having any legal rights to their partner. They have worked for many years to have a home, cars, and other valuables together, and when one dies I have seen the family come in and take almost everything, leaving the remaining partner with nothing, after both partners have worked all their lives for what they have. I feel it is important that gay couples have some form of legal union whether it is called marriage or otherwise so that they have some form of protection for the property that they have worked for. I am a married man to a woman with whom I have children and grandchildren. I have had friends that are gay and have been together for many years without having any legal rights to their partner. They have worked for many years to have a home, cars, and other valuables together, and when one dies I have seen the family come in and take almost everything, leaving the remaining partner with nothing, after both partners have worked all their lives for what they have.
