Former Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad made a splash here when he started looking and sounding like a potential candidate for governor once more, but around the country, it’s becoming par for the course.
CQ Politics’ Political Wire reports that no fewer than five former governors could seek their old offices next year, including Branstad:
- In Oregon, John Kitzhaber (D) will file paperwork today to seek a new term in 2010.
- In California, Jerry Brown (D) is running and leads in polls to reclaim his old post.
- In Iowa, Terry Branstad (R) is mulling a return and appears to be the only one who can beat current Gov. Chet Culver (D).
- In Maryland, Robert Ehrlich (R) is keeping open the possibility of a re-match with Gov. Martin O’Malley (D), who beat him in 2006.
- In Georgia, Roy Barnes (D) leads in polls should he seek another term.
