I, personally, provided faith-based counseling to my community for many years on a donation only basis. I rarely ever asked for any money, and much of the time exceeded my advertised hours. Yes, I paid for advertisement! I earned nothing. I did it out of compassion and need. Ironically, there was a problem with 'perceived value'. People tended to have a problem with attending a service that required no fees, and when they did, they did not make a donation of any kind. Churches in the area were happy to refer people to me, as they could only handle so much. The clients, however, gave their support to the churches financially, while I struggled to keep the practice afloat. The churches gave zero support of any kind to me...neither personnel nor financial. Yet, praises continued to come my way along with referrals. Eventually, I was forced to take a sabbatical for my own sanity! <br><br>I think we need to take a good look at the situation above and assess the need for more community-based services like the one I operated a few years ago. The need is even greater than ever today, with the economy the way that it is. The sad thing is, so many of us who have been burned are afraid of stepping out again. We see mega-churches out there taking and taking and not giving back. Little guys are doing the work and are being denied support. If you see someone doing good in your community, help them out in any way that you can. Make a donation of time or finances. Every little bit helps. Believe me, it will be appreciated.
