Republican U.S. Rep. Steve King of Kiron was the only member of Iowa’s congressional delegation to vote against a $2 billion spending bill Friday afternoon to extend the “cash for clunkers” program.
The bill, of which Democratic U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley was a co-sponsor, aims to encourage American car owners to trade in older, less fuel efficient cars for higher gas mileage vehicles by offering a $4,500 rebate. King voted in favor of the original legislation last month.
“I’m hopeful that the Senate is going to act quickly on this,” Braley told reporters Friday. “My hope is that if they don’t act today they will act early next week and we can get this bill to the president’s desk and get it approved.”
King has not yet issued a statement explaining his rationale for opposing the program.
The Senate is expected to take up the measure next week. Republican John McCain has already promised a filibuster.
