The state’s Transportation Commission, an arm of the Department of Transportation, approved $50 million to repair 55 bridges across the state at their monthly meeting Tuesday.
The money is part of Gov. Chet Culver’s I-JOBS infrastructure improvement plan. The $830 million bonding program establishes the Bridge Safety Fund, administered by the Department of Transportation, and allocates $50 million for infrastructure projects relating to functionally obsolete and structurally deficient bridges.
In April, 232 of Iowa’s bridges were classified as structurally deficient and 311 as functionally obsolete.
The commission also approved funding for several other transportation projects, including public transit and general aviation airport infrastructure.
