Meat From Cloned Animals May Get More Scrutiny

By Dien Judge | 12.21.07 | 5:57 pm

Are you ready to eat meat from cloned animals?

Meat and dairy producers are pushing for a system to track cloned livestock, according to an AP article this week. And Chris Clayton at DTN Ag News explains it here.

Rep. Leonard Boswell, D-Iowa, has introduced a bill that would make the U.S. Department of Agriculture conduct further study on the effects of cloned foods entering the food supply. Boswell's legislation would require the USDA "to examine the economic and trade impact of agricultural exports of food products from cloned animals, along with how food products from cloned animals will be monitored," as stated in a press release Friday.

The Food and Drug Administration is expected to soon give final approval for the sale of food products from cloned animals. The U.S. House of Representatives' version of the Farm Bill does not address the issue, but the Senate's Farm Bill contains an amendment calling for further study.

Good thing to know… This is scary! Do you have a number for the % of cloned meat? The regulation should be in place.
