Tom Tancredo has called a 2 p.m. press conference for Thursday to make what the campaign is characterizing as a major announcement.
With just 12 days left until the Iowa Caucus, Tancredo is barely registering among most voters in public opinion polls. Several media outlets are reporting that rumors are swirling about that Tancredo will drop out of the race.
However, operatives from other campaigns say the only people speculating that he will withdraw are reporters themselves.
The press conference comes just four days after Rep. Steve King, the fifth district congressman from Kiron, threw his support behind Fred Thompson’s presidential bid. King said after the press conference that he considered Tancredo his best friend in congress and that he greatly admired the work the Colorado representative has done in making illegal immigration a key issue in the debate.“Tom Tancredo deserves the greatest appreciation and admiration of the American people. Without Tancredo relentlessly pressing the issue first from the floor of Congress and then as a candidate for president, the American people would not have jammed the switchboards and blocked comprehensive amnesty,” King said Monday. “Tom is running for president to save our country from the impending disaster that I’ve described. The measure of his success is in the platforms of every Republican candidate and even in that of the Democrats. No candidate has had so profound an effect on any public policy of America. Every Republican has taken the no amnesty pledge and adopted a tough on illegal immigration stance. Tom Tancredo has been so successful that much his political capital has been co-opted by his opponents. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”
If Tancredo does drop out of the race and endorses another candidate, it might be because he sees the move as his last act in ensuring that Iowa Republicans select a strict immigration reformist during the caucus. New polls show that questions about front-runner Mike Huckabee’s stance on immigration is causing some Evangelical voters in Iowa to once again reconsider their choices.
