Farmer Kills Self and 51 Cows

http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=9640192

As a Struggling Dairy Farmer: I think I know what Pierson was trying to say. He was calling for help, not just for himself but for all dairy farmers. I am sure that after all the protests and actions in the last 18 months, the government and the main stream media just do not get it. I am sure he thought that shooting the cows would make this a national story. I am shocked at how little coverage there is. I do not understand the government or the media.

So, I ask you to take action to save small dairy farmers. Please take an hour to review these web sites, and if you can please join either or both of these organizations please do so:

http://www.farmtoconsumer.org/

http://www.realmilk.com/

These sites will show you how to buy milk from the farmer, so that he can have the money to take care of his cows and his family.

Extremely tragic. It's terrible that the nation isn't better prepared and equipped for this. It's time to set some priorities. This quote struck me as particularly true and sad:

“Ownership of a family farm — sometimes a farm that has been in the family for generations — is the triumphant result of a multitude of struggles. Losing the farm or the livestock is viewed as an ultimate loss, one that brings shame to the generation that has let down its forebearers and has dashed the hopes of successors.”

Living in western Iowa I've seen my share of farmers threatened with losing their farms over the years, and now moreso. However none of them seem overly depressed, at least to a degree that would send up a red flag. Although farmers probably are less likely to show their emotions publicly or seek help than the average person.
