Videos: Young Voters Turn Out for Joe Biden

By Adam Burke | 12.07.07 | 12:56 pm

Delaware Sen. Joe Biden pleased many fans at an event on the University of Iowa campus on Tuesday evening, but perhaps none more so than Alex Denison, a high school student from Burlington, Iowa. He drove with his mother (an Obama supporter) over 70 miles to see his political hero.

Denison was being crowned homecoming king the last time Biden was in Burlington, so he missed his candidate. He practically begged Biden and his staff to come back to his town.

Wearing an unofficial Joe Biden T-shirt he bought from the Internet, Denison said he has supported Biden since he entered the race. Biden signed the book the young man brought, his Promises to Keep.

The event was organized by the Student Association for Voter Empowerment (SAVE) and by The Roosevelt Institute. Iowa Independent reporter Tom Lindsey also has coverage of Biden’s talk.

More videos from the event available below the fold.Event organizer and SAVE Director Matt Segal said that young voters should be encouraged to develop their “civic engagement.” He said that those who stand in the way of college students who want to drive back to their precincts to attend caucuses “probably have an inaccessible ideology.”

Here’s Segal on engaging young voters:

Joe Biden talks about the average age of caucus voters in Iowa in this video. He was also asked how to increase student participation.
