The U.S. Senate blocked an energy bill from moving forward Friday, as a motion for cloture failed on a vote of 53-42. The cloture motion would have required a 60-vote supermajority to pass.
The energy bill, which had just passed the U.S. House on Thursday, would have significantly raised fuel efficiency standards for vehicles in the U.S and would have also raised the production of renewable fuels.
All of the sitting Democratic senators who are running for president voted in favor of the cloture motion, Sens. Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Joe Biden and Chris Dodd, and Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin also voted for passage.
Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., was absent and did not vote.
Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley voted against the cloture motion.
