When I took at look at Iowa Senate Minority Leader Paul McKinley’s new Web site yesterday, I noticed the same thing Craig Robinson did: the “Contribute” page says that it is paid for by a different committee from the rest of the site.
The second committee, “Paul McKinley for Iowa,” caught my interest because of the supposed rumors that McKinley is pondering a run for governor. I have never put much stock in those rumors, assuming that they were meant more to gin up contributions for Senate Republicans than anything else, but I called the Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board yesterday to find out whether the new committee exists.
It doesn’t. The IECDB told me that the committee would be forced to file a “statement of organization” within 10 days of raising or spending $750, and they confirmed that no statement of organization has been filed for “Paul McKinley for Iowa.”
So it’s a mistake, and it’s a somewhat embarassing one: on the page that solicits contributions, the only campaign committee listed is nonexistent. Where is a donor supposed to believe his or her money is going?
