Rumors and Accusations Cast Shadows on Brown and Black Presidential Forum

By admin | 11.29.07 | 12:46 pm

As Saturday night’s Brown and Black Presidential Forum in Des Moines draws near, concerns have emerged about the way it is being organized.  The forum, which is the oldest minority-focused presidential debate in the country, is one of the great traditions of the Iowa Caucuses, but local activists and campaigns have been frustrated by this year’s planning and execution.

The core group helping to organize the forum has been shrunk from previous years, according to Des Moines Realtor and Latino activist Joe Henry, who was involved with the forum in its early years during the 1980s and became involved again during the 2000 election cycle.  Henry, who supports Sen. Barack Obama, was not invited to participate in the planning this year.

“It’s pretty evident at this point that both Wayne Ford and Mary Campos — both old friends of mine — have undoubtedly aligned themselves with the Clinton campaign,” he said, “and the smaller, the better, for that.”  Campos and Ford, both respected and long-standing activists, founded the forum together in 1984 and continue to operate it as co-chairs.  Ford also serves in the Iowa House.

Reached for comment Wednesday afternoon, the two organizers denied any allegations that they were favoring one candidate over others.  “I don’t think that question needs an answer,” Ford said.  “I am a little insulted that people would even think that,” continued Campos.

Mark Daley, Iowa Communications Director for Sen. Hillary Clinton’s campaign, denied the accusations as well.

Still, concerns exist because of the uncharacteristic exclusivity of the planning for this year’s forum.Max Cardenas, a Hispanic entrepreneur from Des Moines, was involved in the 2004 Brown and Black Presidential Forum.  He told Iowa Independent that he was invited to participate in the planning of that year’s forum a month before it began.  In the week preceding it, he was asked to organize one of several community-wide meetings focusing on specific issue areas that were of interest to the minority community.  The meetings served as part of the build-up to to the Saturday forum, he said, and they helped to maximize the number of people involved in the discussion before questions were formulated and the forum took place.  This year, he was not invited to participate, and there was no indication that any such meetings took place.  “That’s unfortunate,” he said.

Although Cardenas admitted he had not seen “concrete evidence” that either Campos or Ford planned to endorse Sen. Hillary Clinton, he noted speculatively that “The guests of Mary Campos [who will be at the Forum with her] are co-chairs of the Clinton campaign.”

Henry said he did not have concrete proof that Campos and Ford were operating the forum to the benefit of Clinton, either.  But, he said, “If they weren’t doing it consciously, they were doing it through reduction of size” of the group invited to participate in organizing the forum, “Kind of in an unconscious way.”

“By not allowing larger or more participation, they pretty much knew what they were going to do,” he continued.  “It lends itself to partisan behavior.”

“Both Mary and Wayne, they already know which group they are going to support… They know what is going to be the end result.”  Henry added, “Again, I’m not going to be surprised a day after the forum that an endorsement’s going to [be announced] and they’re going to support Clinton.”

Aside from the concerns raised by past participants about who was included in the planning of the forum and who was excluded, three knowledgeable sources who asked to remain anonymous expressed frustration over the apparent secrecy with which tickets are being distributed.  Each presidential campaign has been promised approximately 50 tickets to hand out to their supporters, the organizers say, but the auditorium at North High School in Des Moines seats more than 1,000 people.  If all eight participating candidates (including Rep. Dennis Kucinich and former Sen. Mike Gravel) fill all 50 of their allotted seats with supporters, that would still leave the majority of the auditorium empty.  Campaigns were set to receive their allotment of tickets Thursday afternoon.

In an interview, Campos and Ford did not explain how they would fill the rest of the auditorium, nor did the organization respond to an emailed request for clarification after the interview concluded.  The Brown and Black Forum’s web site does not offer any information about ticket distribution to the public.

Although no sources could provide proof of who would receive the additional tickets, three sources independently speculated that they would go to Clinton supporters, a charge which the Clinton campaign denies.

But Ford and Campos would not admit to any bias. “There’s no proof out there that me and Mary have ever done anything wrong,” said Ford.  He also noted that the forum operates as a tax-exempt 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, so it cannot endorse a political candidate.  It is “completely nonpartisan and noncommittal to any party,” said Ryan Ford, who acts as the forum’s liason with the media.  “The co-chairs … make sure that they do not commit or do any work for any of the campaigns before the forum” for this reason, he continued.

But the organizers do plan to issue individual endorsements.  “My history has always been, after the forum is over, when I have a comfortable zone, I’ll make a decision,” Wayne Ford said.  “I plan to make a statement about who impressed me.”  Campos confirmed that she, too, would probably make an endorsement, but noted that “I believe we have all good candidates running.”

Neither would commit to a timetable for announcing their endorsements, admitting that they could come as early as next week or as late as January 2, 2008.  Both said they had not made up their minds about which candidates they might support.

For their parts, both Cardenas and Henry called the appearance of bias — whether true or not — “unfortunate.”

“I think the Brown and Black Forum, given its national audience — it’s a great opportunity for African-Americans and Hispanics” in Des Moines, said Cardenas.

“Now other Latinos and other African-Americans are being excluded from a group that should not be discriminatory and partisan,” said Henry.  “It should be about the issues.”

Asked why the forum has been the subject of allegations and scrutiny this year, Ford paused.  “It must be a close race,” he said.

Shocked…absolutely shocked! I’m shocked…absolutely shocked about these allegations!  Not really.  The comical part to Clinton-rigging is it’s SO transparent.  Trying to rig any event by packing the crowd with your supporters just becomes SO obvious.  The Nevada debate was comical.  Hordes of unseen fans actually booing candidates who were not Hillary.  This kind of stuff has done nothing but harm Hillary’s chances.  It plays into Hillary’s two worst problems which is Americans just do not like her from a personality standpoint and don’t simply don’t trust her.

As a result, Dems who don’t like her become more set in that stance, and Dems who are still trying to decide lean toward someone else.  Simple.  If I were Obama, I’d be praying for Clinton manipulation of this event, because the truth comes out afterward and Clinton drops another couple percent.

” A Mind of My Own “ I thank God that I live in a country where I can express my thoughts and ideas as so many have done in the above comments. Isn’t it funny that when people don’t get what they want, or feel excluded to express their own views, they critize others and the process in which something is being done? I don’t care what Wayne Ford or Mary Campos does, they are going to be hit with peoples opinions, especially if its not along the lines of what certain individuals feel is their point of view. Hats off to Wayne and Mary for their continued work in putting on the Black & Brown Forum. The whole essense of presenting the Forum is where different ideas come together to help others make their choice of who they choose to support, the same as Mr. Ford and Ms. Campos will do when the time is appropriate. Stop bickering, and choose who you feel is the best person that has your interest at heart, as hopefully you have a mine of your own. Isn’t it beautiful that you can do this, regardless of what Ms. Clinton or her supporters do because you are in charge of you and your own destiny?

Problems getting tickets Chase, family and friends of mine interested in going to the forum have had problems getting tickets even though they live in the neighborhood and have (or have had) children attend North High.  They tried calling Urban Dreams, the organization listed on their website for more information and they were told by someone working there that they didn’t know how the tickets were being distributed–and that was a phone call early this week.  I blogged a bit about this here.

    Happy holidays!

I expect several endorsements after the forum Several weeks ago I saw Representative Ako Abdul-Samad at an event, and I asked him if he was planning to endorse. He said he would make an endorsement sometime after the Brown and Black Forum. He waited until the last week or two of the campaign to endorse Kerry last time.

I’m sorry to hear about problems with the tickets. I hope this will not turn into a repeat of the Las Vegas debate, with a bunch of Clinton supporters getting a disproportionate number of seats and booing other candidates.

Dishonesty This is absurd that the Caucus Organizors will allow such corruption. All of this should be revealed to the public and the citizens of Iowa AND other caucus states should not allow BRIBERY to take place in this crucial decision-making process. Selfishness in this process is HUGH in the price of so many people involved. What else will these people do to get elected?

  • MarkieBee

Hinky Hillary again? Perhaps the rest of the tickets are going out to New York Chinatown dishwashers as thanks for their $1,000 donations to Hillary’s campaign. The campaign will fly them in on Vinod Gupta’s private jet. The Las Vegas planted booers have already maxed out and have to find their own way there.

hillary will allienate voters the fallout from the Las Vegas fiasco hurt Clinton.  and people have seen politicians who said they would support either Obama or Edwards suddenly endorse Hillary amid reports of arm twisting and threats.
For her to stack the forum will serve to upset voters against her even more.
This is why her negatives are so high and she is seen as not being ethical or trustworthy.
Please keep us informed.  I’m sure we will know if it’s true this weekend.  And I hope the people in Iowa will raise kane over it.

How dare you? How dare you post such innuendo with no supporting facts?  How dare you not go directly to Campos and Ford for their defense of these allegations?…..oh you did?  How dare you not even give them a chance to explain how they will distribute the other 600 tix?…..oh, you did?

The Hillary-supporting posters on this board who are trying to shoot the messenger, but their whining is pretty hollow.  These are legitimate questions to raise, and the non-denials and lack of explanations out of Ford and Campo speak volumes.

A response like, “I don’t think that question needs an answer,” is not a denial.  If the explanation to how the other 600 tix are distributed is innocent, why not offer it?  For Campos and Ford to act like they don’t have to answer legitimate questions suggests that they don’t feel accountable to their constituents, at least those that aren’t supporting Hillary.

Ticket Fiasco Fact – The North High School auditorium is the largest school auditorium in the Des Moines public schools. The North High School auditorium capacity – 1,800.

50 tickets are distributed to 8 candidates campaigns = 400 tickets

200 tickets allocated to the local and national media

Wayne Ford and Mary Campos give out 1,200 tickets at their own discretion

I tried on 4 occasions over a four day period to obtain tickets from Urban Dreams (Wayne Ford Executive Director) without success. I e-mailed a request for tickets, I called twice and finally visited the office for tickets and each time I was given a different story about the ticket situation and each time I was denied access.

I live in and work in the community.  It’s unfortunate that two organizers have manipulated the process and denied access for local citizens of color to participate in the political process.
