King: Pelosi is an ‘enemy of national security’

By Jason Hancock | 05.15.09 | 11:24 am

Iowa Rep. Steve King is calling on Democrats to remove Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House because of her claim that CIA officials violated the law by failing to give her a ‘full briefing’ on the techniques used to interrogate detainees suspected of terrorism.

Speaking on Fox News, King said former speakers have been ousted “for much less,” and called Pelosi an “enemy of national security.”

“It is utter arrogance to think that she can roll back the truth,” King said. “We need to know when Nancy Pelosi was briefed… what did she know and when did she know it.”

King’s interviewer, Fox anchor Megyn Kelly, condemned Pelosi for attacking “patriots” who “helped prevent another attack on American soil.”

King agreed. “She is at some point going to have to face the truth,” he said.

Pelosi said she was told during a classified briefing in September 2002 that the CIA was not engaged in waterboarding, even though records now indicate that the agency had employed the method at least 83 times on an Al-Qaida suspect one month earlier.

Republican have charged that Pelosi was complicit in the use of waterboarding because she knew all along it was taking place. Pelosi said the GOP is trying to shift the focus of public attention away from the Bush administration’s use of techniques.

Rep. King is a partisan hack and this proves it further.

“We need to know when Nancy Pelosi was briefed… what did she know and when did she know it.”

Same could be said for Tom Delay, who was House MAJORITY leader in 2002.

    Q U E S T I O N:

If Enhanced interrogations(as the G(no)P and enabling Dem's call it isn't TORTURE, then why the fuss as to what she knew or didn't know and when? If there is nothing wrong with these techniques, then their argument falls flat on it's face, because for it to even have a leg to stand on, their position REQUIRES a belief in the element of ILLEGAL INTERROGATION TECHNIQUES.

Is Rep. King hinting that indeed, these techniques were TORTURE and that those who lay cover for their use deserve to be punished?

If so, why not those that devised the methods?
If so, why not those that authorised the methods?
If so, why not those that broke US Law?
If so, why not those that violated Geneva Conventions?

What is this Republican thug trying to imply…that Pelosi was dictating policy? His question should be directed to those in the Bush Administration who were mandating this egregious policy.

To be sure, investigations and prosecutions should now move forward especially that we have more Republicans calling for full disclosure. Absolutely no excuses now Obama and Democratic Congress…move on it!!!

  • vfeinstein

LOL – Well, I was wondering when the GOP would find something to distract from the REAL issue. The REAL issue being WHO AUTHORIZED ILLEGAL TORTURE TECHNIQUES.

At this point in time, I don't care who knew what, and when. What I do care about is who wrote the policy, what their legal justification was (as said justification flies in the face of both our laws and international laws), and who authorized the policy, which is are inconvenient facts for the GOP. Let's find these things out THEN let's find out who knew what and when.

And, what makes King, or any other nitwit cheerleading for torture that I'm going to take THEIR word that torture 'works' when there are OODLES of people who do the actual interrogating saying torture DOESN'T work.

Oh, and I'm sure Nancy Pelosi's crying in her Cheerios over the FAUXNoise bimbo 'condemning patriots.' I'm willing to bet that most of these techniques weren't carried out by CIA but mercenary contractors, who aren't 'patriots' but hired killers.

This from the same guy who says that if gays and lesbians are “allowed” to marry, then that will open up the door to people marrying goats and three-year olds and their children and multiple spouses.

I'd like to now what he suggests should happen to the Republican members of the Gang of 4 or the Gang of 8, to say nothing of the architects of the entire torture program.

    What an effing hypocrite!

  • Hooker

For years Republicans haved adamently asserted, along with Pres. Bush, that “America does not torture!” Now, they seem to be saying “But just in case we did torture, Nancy Pelosi knew about it.” If Pelosi knew about torture, that means the Bush Administration sanctioned torture. If it sanctioned torture, then to prevent it happening in the future, shouldn't we uncover whose idea it was, and who carried it out? This whole Pelosi business is a calculated distraction, and nearly meaningless next to the larger questions.

The real story: Bush need to be an all-powerful president so that he could help his Big Business cronies. The sure way to power is to be a war president. So Bush lied his way to war, claiming that Iraq had WMD, which Iraq did not, and claiming that Saddam had a connection with those terrorists who destroyed the Twin Towers, which was absurd, and known to be absurd by anyone who knew anything about the enmity that existed between Iraq and the terrorists. To make their case, the Bushies resorted to torture in order to manufacture “confessions” that would support the lie they were attempting to put over on the American people. The Bushies tortured for political gain – and the world knows it. Soon the American people will know the truth as well – but first we have to go through the nonsense of what Pelosi knew and every other petty distraction the GOP can come up with.

What cannot be changed is that we tortured. We tortured. We tortured.

Great, I agree. Take out Pelosi, and put in someone that thinks that impeaching/convicting the Bush administration is on the table.

  • mika123

Assuming arguendo that Pelosi actually knew waterboarding was taking place as a member of Congress what was her duty? To break the law by outing a secret or pass legislation to prevent further acts. Neither in fact. So what law did she break ass wipe KIng? None In fact he wants to punish her for knowledge while he lets the entire Executive Branch off the hook for implementation. No wonder the Republicans are considered to be such assholes. As to her accusations about the CIA, of course they lied to the entire country under the Bush Administration.

  • grindermonkey

Let's get the questions answered in the right order.

Who ORDERED the torture and when did they order it?
Who PERFORMED the torture and when?
Who SUPERVISED the torture and when?

LIES are the enemy of national security.
