Grassley cosponsors flag-burning amendment

By Jason Hancock | 05.08.09 | 10:33 am

Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley is cosponsoring a bill that would amend the U.S. Constitution to prohibit the physical desecration of the American flag.

“No other image depicts as clearly the freedoms and ideals of our country than the American flag.  It’s the symbol our men and women in uniform have fought for over 200 years,” Grassley said in a prepared statement. “The American flag has been proudly flown in times of battle, of victory, and of national tragedy. It is the most recognized symbol of freedom and democracy in the world.”

Grassley has cosponsored similar legislation twice before. In 2006, the amendment passed the Senate Judiciary Committee but fell one vote short of the two-thirds of the Senate needed for the amendment to be sent to the states for ratification. In 2000, the Senate fell four votes short.

Grassley said that the American flag should be protected from those who would desecrate it and demonstrate a basic lack of respect for our national heritage.

Overturning a Texas law in 1989, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that burning an American flag in protest is a form of political speech protected under the First Amendment. Congress later passed a federal anti-flag-desecration law, and the high court invalidated it on the same grounds in 1990.

Chuck may claim to love the flag, but he sure hates those that fought for the flag and what it stands for. Ask Chuck why, in the entire Congress, both House and Senate, there are only 2 people with worse voting records on Veterans issues. Ask Chuck why he hates Vets! The latest research 2000 poll found that Republicans are least likely to be patriotic or to want our country to stay together as 50 states. I find it interesting that at the same time they would want to pass constitutional amendments to restrict freedom of speech in this area.

12,000,000,000,000 national debt and rising. I'm sure this is the kind of legislation we need at this point in time. Both parties are totally irresponsible.

I guess this amendment is needed to counter that new fad where everybody in the stadium burns a flag to celebrate a touchdown.

Oh, wait, no. I just completely imagined that fad. Flag-burning virtually never happens in reality, and in any event is functionally indistinguishable from equivalent verbal statements of protest.

So, tell me again why we need to amend the United States Constitution to prevent something that virtually never occurs and doesn't actually cause any real harm when it does?
