Cedar Rapids ‘tea party’ gathering attracts angry crowd

CEDAR RAPIDS — A boisterous, if not out-right angry, crowd of about 100 people gathered in downtown today to protest government spending and high taxes.

While some in the Republican Party have called for the demonstrations to include social conservative issues such as gay marriage and abortion, the Cedar Rapids event remained mostly true to fiscal issues. This was largely due to the fact that demonstrators in attendance seemed to hold little allegiance to either of the nation’s two major political parties.

Cedar Rapids resident Greg Happel dressed as Abraham Lincoln and addressed those in attendance at the Cedar Rapids Tea Party.

While some in the crowd yelled for the ouster of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), just as much animosity was expressed toward Iowa’s two U.S. senators — Democrat Tom Harkin and Republican Chuck Grassley.

“For as long as they’ve been in office, it sure doesn’t seem like Harkin and Grassley have figured it out,” said Tim Pugh, a Cedar Rapids resident who launched the organizing website for the local event.

During the continued discussion on term limits and the need for citizen recall of elected officials, one participant shouted: “We put their ass in office. We should be able to take them out.” Those in attendance roared their approval.

Greg Happel, another Cedar Rapids resident who organized an earlier demonstration and began discussions for this event, said he wasn’t at all prepared for the number of people who ventured into downtown today.

“I’m really at a loss to know what to say except thank you,” he told those gathered below the Tree of the Five Seasons, a local landmark near the Cedar River. “I don’t think we are prepared to discuss specific issues today, but this is just the start of the conversation.”

Eugene Pinney of Cedar Rapids was the lone, publicly defiant demonstrator at today's event.

Happel and Pugh encouraged participants to stay active via the Internet, and, upon prompting from a military veteran in attendance, tentatively set plans for another tea party at 5 p.m., just before a scheduled Cedar Rapids City Council meeting. Once the meeting commences, protesters plan to attend and give council members “a piece of our mind.”

“The sleeping mayor has awoken the sleeping giant,” one participant, referencing a videotape of Cedar Rapids Mayor Kay Halloran nodding off during a meeting, yelled in approval. Halloran has since disclosed that she has a medical condition that contributed to the incident.

“They are wasting our money,” yelled another audience member. “Let’s make them earn it. Let’s tell them that enough is enough.”

Although some attending the event were clearly not taking part in the activity, only one man stood — in his own words — “in protest of the protest.” Cedar Rapids resident Eugene Pinney stood on the 1st Avenue bridge with a handmade sign that read, “more taxes.” While most passing on their way to the event were satisfied with asking Pinney to pay their tax bill or to send the government additional money, at least one demonstrator threatened to toss Pinney off the bridge.

Tim Pugh (right) and Greg Happel encouraged those in attendance to continue the conversation and identify specific issues for future demonstrations.

Following a few short speeches, demonstrators symbolically emptied containers of water off the bridge and into the Cedar River.

Have any of these folks looked at the history of deficits under Republicans vs Democrats? Deficit spending is way worse from Republicans. Obama got a huge mess dumped in his lap by Bush and is doing his best to get the budget straight while still stimulating the economy. All these people sat by silently while Bush ran deficits during a period of economic growth. Now they're out protesting with Obama barely in office? It doesn't make sense.

You have to admire the energy and commitment of anyone that will gather and protest. I just wish it was channeled into getting more information than just FOX News and into a less blatantly partisan direction. I mean, it really is stunning that this never happened with Bush's deficits, but suddenly within a couple months of the Obama presidency Glenn Beck is practically calling on people to take up arms against the government and Texas governor Rick Perry is using secessionist rhetoric. The Republicans really have gone off the deep end into extremism, not that I think everyone at this protest is into the whole Beck/Limbaugh thing.

You're kind of an idiot if you think this was just a republican movement. PEOPLE, have been doing things about this crap BEFORE Obama, it was just squashed by the media. This isn't a rant against Obama, it's a rant against all those that do not uphold the constitution and protect our liberties. I am not republican, I am not democrat, but I AM fiscally conservative. I believe most people are fiscally conservative, at least they are when it starts hitting their pocket books. This is why the rally is just now seeming to catch on, which yes, would look like it is a stand against Obama. It is not though. People are coming to rise, because it is just now starting to affect their pocket books.

Looking at the pictures I do not see how you can claim they are angry. Were bricks thrown at windows? Perhaps the riot police were needed and peper spray was deployed somewhere? It does not appear anyone is screaming. Perhaps it is repressed anger than can not be seen in the pictures of a peacefull assembly of lawfull citizens. Surely if they were as “Angry” as you wish to portray Eugene Pinney would have needed police escort with his counter protest.

You have the liberal talking points down pretty well jrshipley. Of course the protests were not partisan issues – there were liberals, conservatives, and libertarians in Dallas this evening. If you had bothered to attend a tea party, you would have realized what they were all about. However, I am sure that you will be glad to listen to the biased media to get your information. No one sat silently by — we said no to much of the spending in the last 8 years, but the damage done in the short time that Obama has been in office is staggering. As for Texans, and I am proud of our Governor this evening, we are tired of our federal government taking our money and then handing it back to us and telling us how we have to spend it. We do not work for the federal governmet, or the people of California, or the people of New York, or the people of Michigan………….The powers of the Federal Government are enumerated in the Constitution, and those that are not spelled out or prohibited in the Constitution belong to the states. You'd think all of those so-called constitutional scholars in Washington would have read that somewhere along the way.
