On the same day that the Vermont legislature voted to override a gubernatorial veto to become the fourth state with legalized same-sex marriage, the Washington, D.C., council voted unanimously to recognize same-sex marriages that have been sanctioned by a state government.
Currently, married gay and lesbian couples moving into D.C. are provided only domestic partnership rights. But, pending a final council vote next month, all couples legally married in Iowa, Vermont, Connecticut and Massachusetts will be afforded full marriage recognition.
Two openly gay members of the D.C. council believe the move is one step toward legalizing same-sex marriage in the district, but a law like that would require the approval of Congress.
