[Commentary] Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware may have been ignored by the MSNBC moderators during last night’s debate, but the few times he did get the opportunity to speak were not lost on his Democratic rivals. Biden spoke for just over six minutes during the two-hour-long debate, less time than was dedicated to the three commercial breaks. But for each minute Biden did speak, his competitors dropped his name in their own responses. This fact was not ignored by the 20 Biden supporters who gathered at a debate watching party at Rick’s Bar and Spirits in Iowa City.
Biden supporters grew increasingly frustrated with the long lapses in between questions for their candidate (see pic above), who had been muzzled by the MSNBC moderators, Brian Williams and Tim Russert. Biden was out-questioned by Sen. Hillary Clinton three to one during the debate. (Total questions during the debate, including follow up questions:Clinton (21); Obama (17); Edwards (14); Dodd (9); Kucinich (8); Biden (7); Richardson (6))
Moreover, Biden, who is known for providing in-depth responses to questions on the campaign trail in Iowa, had the lowest time-of-possesion among all the candidates during the debate. But this did not rattle Biden’s supporters, who were pleased by another measurement: number of times Biden’s rivals agreed with something he said or praised him during their own clock time.
