Huckabee, Thompson Energize Crowd At Reagan Dinner

By Jay Wagner | 10.28.07 | 8:30 am

Fred Thompson may have gotten more laughs during his speech, but surging Mike Huckabee received the only genuine standing ovation of the night when six Republican presidential candidates spoke to attendees at the annual Reagan Dinner at Hy-Vee Hall in downtown Des Moines.

The $100-a-plate Reagan Dinner the last of three big events leading up to the caucuses, provided a rare chance for party activists to hear six of nine presidential candidates pitch their conservative credentials.

Thompson and Huckabee were the only top-tier candidates to attend; also speaking at the event were Duncan Hunter, John Cox, Tom Tancredo, and Ron Paul. Mitt Romney, who leads polls in the state, sent his wife Ann to address the crowd. Rudy Giuliani and John McCain campaigned outside of the state.

The event is important because it draws attendees from across the state, party activists who will play strong roles in their local caucuses. “Every person in this audience is a leader in their local precinct,” said Ted Sporer, chairman of the Polk County Republican Party. “These are people whose voices will be heard in their caucuses and so it’s important to gain their support.”

Steve Roberts, a Des Moines attorney who sits on the Republican National Committee, said Huckabee turned in the strongest performance of the night and continues to demonstrate his skills as a seasoned speaker. He said Thompson’s folksy speaking style was also appealing to the crowd.“I think Huckabee and Thompson are the two candidates here who were helped the most tonight,” Roberts said.

Indeed, the crowd who dined on chicken and potatoes on Saturday seemed mostly subdued during the speeches until Huckabee took the stage. He told the crowd that he had spent the morning hunting pheasants (a nod to gun owners in the audience), that our battle with Islamic fundamentalists is the most important national security issue in the history of the country, and that protecting the unborn will be a top priority of a Huckabee administration. He criticized the federal tax code, worried aloud about the loss of manufacturing jobs in the United States, and said he wants to end the country’s energy dependency on the Middle East.

“I want to make sure this country is as good to future generations as it has been to me,” he said.

Huckabee was followed by Thompson, who opened his speech with the same joke about his disappearing hair line that he used when he declared his candidacy in Des Moines in September.  Thompson’s address  covered many of the same topics as the other candidates: the Middle East, immigration, federalism and abortion.

He also reminded attendees that his conservative values have remained consistent and that he’s maintained a 100 percent approval rating from pro-life groups throughout his career. a jab at the voting records of Romney and Giuliani. “I was a conservative yesterday, I am a conservative today, and I will be a conservative tomorrow,” he said.

“It’s our obligation to take the greatest country in the history of the world and make sure it stays that way,” he said.

One of the most talked about moments of the evening came during an address by Chicago businessman John Cox, who all but conceded defeat in the caucuses. Cox has been unable to gain any significant support in the state, and joked with the crowd that he has about as much of a chance to win the presidency next year as the Chicago Cubs have of winning the World Series. He blamed the national media for ignoring his campaign and said that he plans to return to Chicago and start a political action committee.

What about the others? Why is Huckabee considered top tier, but Ron Paul isn’t?  He has more money and more supporters.  By the way, did Ron Paul say anything at this get together, or just stand there?  You might as well also report what Tancredo, Hunter, and Ann had to say as well for the sake of completeness.

Huckabee IS top-tier Unlike Ron Paul (who maybe has 3%), Mike Huckabee just surpassed Romney in a new poll and now has 12% (Romney w/ 11%…although it is within the margin of error).  Huckabee does FAR more w/ less money than anyone else, also Huckabee actually could have a shot at Iowa.  Not too mention he is endorsed by Chuck Norris…if that's not top-tier, I don't know what is.  Btw, the leader in the GOP tier is Guliani w/ about 20%.

I Agree Mike Huckabee is a great candidate.  Ron Paul is also a populist but it does not matter how much money he raises, some of his ideas will not be received nor will they for a long time.  He is at 3%, isn;t even close to winning in his home state, won't win in Iowa, won't win in NH….I don't think there is a state he will even come close to winning.  It is good to see some support for him- it shows that there are a fair amount of people that are upset with our current system but a good portion of Paul's support will eventually trickle towards Huckabee as the other populist candidate (i.e. without any PAC money or corporate money)who not only has a iable candidcy but now should win.

Mike Huckabee is clearly moving forward and upward – and not just his national polls, but also his fuundraising.  Now that some of the christian establishment have started to back him (in the last few weeks)and others are following suit, it will start to erode into Mitt Romney's support even more.  The christian establishment has yet to even throw all their support behind Huckabee and yet, you can already see how broad Huckabee's support is.

Fred Thompson's campaign is in trouble indeed.  He lost more staff this past week and is doing very poorly now in New Hampshire.  The race is really between 3 men now:  Rudy (who is too close to Hillary in several issues), Huckabee (who has momentum and is gathering a large sum of money this quarter and has spend very little on the campaign to date) and John McCain (who is benifiting from some of Fred's lost support as is Mike Huckabee).

Huckabee is my preferred candidate and is the only one who can beat Hillary.

This is Why…. Why is Huckabee top tier, and Ron Paul isn't, you say?  Let's see… 12% and rising in the Rasmussen polls.  Ron Paul hasn't been above 4%.  Oh, and by the way, that 12% surpasses Romney, so if you want to talk money, Romney has spent $50 million more than Huckabee, yet is losing ground to him.  Has Paul garnered that kind of support?  I don't think so.

  • ceesman

I was wondering the same thing? He is a top-tier in money raising!  Also in many demographics.  Fox news reported the event and named all speakers BUT Ron Paul.  It's kinda sad when the media feels the need to try and squash a candidate.  Ron Paul's message has legs and will overcome.

bigpaul Ron Paul is gonna win, all the attacks are coming from people with weak Candidates with over inflated polls that are purchased by big media, RP 2008 is gonna bring back the Constitution and silence you uninformed people that have no respect for the constitution, freedom, small government,no nation building, etc, etc.

Hey, why dont you google the US Embassy in Iraq and decide if there telling you the truth, we have no intent other that complete domination of the oil rich region, why won't Hillary make public the documents concerning her stint in the white House after a FOIA request. Ron Paul is for everything good and just, We will vote RP no matter the lies and deception from BIG BAD DECEPTIVE MEDIA.

IF ONLY PEOPLE WOULD FORGET ABOUT MONEY AND CARE ABOUT THERE NEIGHBOR, CITY, STATE, COUNTRY, SOVEREIGNTY, CONSTITUTION, BILL OF RIGHTS.

I have to ask my self daily why America has lost it's way and the answer is no further than the uneducated Americans that cast votes based on propaganda spread by the BIG CORPERATIONS that own the BIG MEDIA that run the BIG GOVERNMENT that wants to take everything away from you.

PLEASE EDUCATE YOURSELVES as Iraq nor Iran have the Tech to build much less send a nuclear weapon our way, even if they crafted the weapon thier missle tech is not good enough for more than a couple hundred miles, We have superior missle defense that would stop any hypothetical attack that may occur.

Please wake from the fear that George W Bush has sent you into and educate yourself on all thing around you, he is using your fear to pass unconstitutional bills, start unconstitutional wars, and elect candidates that will further his unconstitutional ways.

BIG CORPERATIONS run most of the Government that has sent us down the path of destruction we are on, It's time to revert back to a nation that has alliances with nobody, trade with everybody, get rid of the 700+ basses in 130 countries, protect American interests and forget about ruling the World.
