A majority of the Iowa Republican Central Committee is in favor of holding the Republican Caucus on Jan. 3 and will hold a conference call on Oct. 16 to approve the date, State Republican Chairman Ray Hoffmann told the Iowa Independent on Monday.
Ten of 17 members participated in the conference call and favored January 3 as the caucus date, Hoffmann said. However, party bylaws require that a ten day notice be given before any official decision can be made on a date, and so an official vote has been scheduled for Oct. 16.
Hoffmann said Friday’s conference call centered around discussions on whether January 3 or 5 would best serve the party’s needs.
Caucuses for both parties had been set for the night of Jan. 14 but will likely be moved so that the state can preserve its first-in-the-nation position. Last week, Iowa Democratic Party spokeswoman Carrie Giddins said despite some speculation that the two major parties could hold caucuses on separate nights, she doubted that would happen. “We are working with our Republican counterparts for a mutual caucus date.”
