U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley has put to bed a rumor that he may challenge Gov. Chet Culver in 2010.
The story started when state Sen. Matt McCoy, D-Des Moines, predicted on Des Moines NBC affiliate WHO-TV’s “The Insiders” that Grassley will not run for another term when his seat expires next year, and would instead throw his hat into the gubernatorial ring.
During his weekly conference call with reporters, Grassley said the proof of his intentions can be found in his campaign bank account.
I need to inform Sen. McCoy – and he’s a friend so I don’t say this in a denigrating way – he ought to keep track of the number of fundraisers I’ve had for reelection to the United States Senate. And since the November election, I’ve had 12 fundraisers.
So I wouldn’t be raising money for the Senate because, under Iowa law, you can’t spend it in the race for governor.
