Braley: Recovery funds stalled by government red tape

By Lynda Waddington | 02.26.09 | 11:18 am

Flood damage at the Great America Furniture Mart in downtown Cedar Rapids remains extensive despite efforts at clean-up. The final fate of many structures, including the nearby Cedar Rapids Public Library, remains unclear.U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley expressed his disappointment today that billions of dollars approved by Congress for disaster recovery has not made it into the hands of those who need it.

“I expect that real flood recovery money is going to be distributed as soon as it gets through the red tape that federal agencies have set up, which is preventing it from getting to the people in need,” Braley said during a conference call with reporters today.

He said the problem is not only something that he is battling in Washington, D.C., but something that the entire Iowa delegation has fought against.

“It’s very frustrating to [the Iowa delegation] that nearly $30 billion dollars in disaster assistance that was appropriated by September 2008 still isn’t in the hands of deserving Iowans,” he said.

“It’s very frustrating that there is still money for New Orleans that was appropriated years ago — over $5.5 billion dollars that hasn’t been distributed because of road blocks in how that funding is getting out. It’s unacceptable. That’s why we continue to have very strenuous conversations with agency heads to eliminate those obstacles.”
