Students would be required to attend school until they are 17 under a bill passed by the House Education Committee Monday.
By a 12-10 vote, the committe approved House File 40, a bill that raises the compuslary school attendance age from 16 to 17. It also encourages students who intend to drop out to file a formal declaration and participate in an exit interview.
Critics say raising the drop out age could allow one student who is not interested in being in class to undermine their fellow classmates. Rep. Mike May, R-Spirit Lake, offered an amendment that would have allowed districts to determine if some students should be allowed to leave school at 16. The amendment was defeated.
The bill now goes to the full House.
