Video: King faces off against Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

By Jason Hancock | 02.04.09 | 3:37 pm

The U.S. House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law held a hearing Wednesday  to examine the impact and possible remedies for midnight rules, which is the term given to last-minute regulations forged by an outgoing administration.

According to Politico, the highlight of the day took place when Iowa’s own Rep. Steve King went head-to-head with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. who was there discussing the environmental regulations enacted by the Bush Administration in its final days.

After Kennedy questioned King’s ties to corporate agriculture, King recalled Kennedy’s well-publicized battle with drugs when he asked if his interest in the environment was inspired by a mandatory community service sentence.

Here’s a very, very rough transcript from the Politico:

We don’t have the exact transcript yet, but here’s the exchange as it was Blackberried to us:

King — you said hog farmers more dangerous than bin laden

Kennedy — yeah, and its true

Kennedy — how much did you get from farm industry King?

King. — how did you get involved in enviro issues, sentenced to community service?

Update: Here is the video, courtesy of King himself. Politico’s transcript is a little off but hits all the major points (the most heated exchange takes place at the end of the video).

    Mr. Hancock,

You forgot to provide your readers with RFK's quote about the evil hog producers.

I'm sure that was just a mistake on your part, right?

“King — you said hog farmers more dangerous than bin laden”

Maybe you missed the above quote. It's in the grey box.

  • Peggy2

Here, Jason, let me do your job for you.

RFKjr said that hog producers are “the worst polluter in America.”

Don't you think a media outlet based in Iowa would want to bring that to the forefront of this story since it leads up to WHY these two ended up going at it?

I understand, though. If you were to report this story accurately and in it's totality, it would make Steve King look good and we can't have that now, can we?

KIng: “You understand, Mr. Kennedy, that we do have regulations and limit the rate of [manure] application so that it's not a pollutant.”

RFK: (pointing finger) “If you think those regulations are enforced, if you think those regulations are effective, I beg you to come to North Carolina with me and look around. Come even to Iowa and look around. That's what the ?? agencies are saying and it's complete baloney!” (still pointing finger)

    8:25
King: “Well, Mr. Kennedy, I remind you that I live in the middle of this and uh the wind blows in four directions and the water runs down hill…[inaudible]…for all my life and I do not see the description you describe to the panel and I've got to take exception to it.”

RFK: “I would ask you how much in contributions you received from the Farm Bureau and the Pork Producers council.” [giggling in chamber]

King: “I'd have to look. I'd ask how you got into this industry in the first place?”

RFK: “How did I get into it?”

    King: “Yes.”

RFK: “'Cause they're the worst polluter in America!”

King: “Weren't you assigned to do some public service that got you started in this, Mr. Kennedy?”

RFK: “You mean protecting the environment?”

    9:00
King: “No. I mean assigned to 800 hours of public service that was your gateway into this Hudson [inaudible].”

    Chair: “Time's expired, Mr. King.”

King: “You impugned my character with your question, Mr. Kennedy.”

    RFK: “Well…”

    King: “And I question yours.”

RFK: “If you're asking me how I got into…”

    Chair: “Time's expired.”
