Pesky Grassley retirement speculation persists

By Jason Hancock | 01.28.09 | 6:13 pm

In its first official report on the 2010 campaign, Swing State Project has deemed Iowa’s senate contest as “a race to watch.”

  • Iowa – Chuck Grassley (R): RTW
  • Grassley’s been the subject of a lot of retirement rumors, if only because of his age. But his tight relationship with Max Baucus, and his career-long posture as more of a process guy than a legislation guy, probably mean that his life in the minority is a lot better than average. If he bails, though, this race will probably attract the likes of Rep. Bruce Braley and shoot straight to Tossup. (D)

Now, let’s forget for a second that Grassley has said he is absolutely running again in 2010 and that all the commentators who are saying otherwise don’t know what they are talking about. Even if he did decide to hang ‘em up, Braley seems to be positioning himself for a long career in the House of Representatives, not a Senate run.

Sure, there is still plenty of time between now and Election Day for either one to change his mind.

If Grassley runs, the jury is still out whether the Dems would have a chance against him. Some believe it would be a kamikaze mission, while others think if the right person ran Grassley could be in trouble (or, for that matter, he might get scared into retirment).
