Quad Cities alt-weekly switches to bi-weekly

By Jason Hancock | 01.18.09 | 2:15 pm

The River Cities Reader, the Davenport-based alternative newsweekly covering the Quad Cities, has shifted from a weekly to a bi-weekly publishing schedule due to “increasingly diminishing returns” of the print product, editor Jeff Ignatius told readers last week.

The independently owned paper that has published every Wednesday since 1995 will put more focus on its Web site, Ignatuius said.

The Web is not only a superior delivery system for some content, but it allows easy access to context (previous articles and background papers, for example) and primary materials (audio, video, and documents), and it’s also a platform for instant feedback.

Our aim is to better use the newspaper for content that benefits from being in print for two weeks, and to better use the Web for content that benefits from being searchable and linked to other content. This transition gives us the opportunity to improve our online and print products.

Ignatius it was critical that readers understood a reduced publishing schedule will not mean reduction in content.
