Iowa news site hires former Register D.C. reporter

By Jason Hancock | 01.09.09 | 12:37 pm

Former Des Moines Register Washington correspondent Jane Norman is once again writing for an Iowa audience.

Norman has been hired as a columnist for IowaPolitics.com, a non-partisan, for-profit political news service that aggregates news and publishes a daily newsletter. Norman will be writing a column entitled “A View From D.C.,” where she will try to put an Iowa perspective on news from the nation’s capitol.

A member of the Register’s Washington bureau for 20 years, Norman was laid off in August along with 26 other Register employees. The paper’s D.C. bureau currently consists of only one reporter.

Norman wrote the following note to readers of IowaPolitics.com:

A NOTE FROM JANE NORMAN: An introduction or re-introduction may be in order. While I’m a native of Illinois and live now in the D.C. area, my strong ties to Iowa stretch back for decades. I worked for 20 years as a Washington correspondent for The Des Moines Register before I was laid off in August as part of a company-wide cutback. Prior to my Washington assignment, I lived and worked in Des Moines for 11 years and covered the Legislature and Des Moines City Hall for the Register. I’m a graduate of Drake University’s fine journalism program. I’m thrilled to be writing again for an Iowa publication and connecting with Iowa readers.
